Vast Infraestrutura completes its 1,000th transshipment operation at T-Oil

Vast Infraestrutura successfully and safely completed its 1,000th operation at its terminal on May 3rd, marking the handling of 1 billion barrels of oil in almost nine years of operation in the market.

During this period, Vast has consolidated a solid reputation for safe, reliable operations with a low carbon emissions profile at T-Oil, which has become Brazil’s leading private terminal, responsible for moving around 40% of all Brazilian oil exports, the country’s main export product.

1st HVO refueling in the Brazilian maritime sector

Vast Infraestrutura achieved a major milestone in the Brazilian maritime sector: the 1st refueling with HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) in the country’s maritime industry.

Carried out at Vast’s Açu Liquid Terminal (TLA), in partnership with Wilson Sons, efen, and Port of Açu, the pioneering operation supplied the tugboat WS Rosalvo, a vessel in the Wilson Sons fleet that operates at Port of Açu.

Known as green diesel, HVO has the potential to reduce the vessel’s carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by up to 80%, representing a key step toward the sector’s decarbonization.

The terns arrived at T-Oil for the 2025 season of the Birds of Açu project

The Cabot’s and South American terns are already at the Vast Infraestrutura terminal, T-Oil, marking the beginning of the 2025 season of the Birds of Açu project.

The initiative, voluntarily created by Vast in 2022, aims to conserve these endangered seabirds, which have chosen the terminal as a breeding and feeding site. The project promotes better coexistence between the birds and operational activities. Every year, starting in April, the terns arrive at T-Oil and remain until September, when their reproductive cycle ends.

Birds of Açu, now supported by PETRONAS Brazil, carries out research, conservation, mapping of migratory routes, and bird management, in addition to environmental education activities with employees and surrounding communities.

Vast Infraestrutura carries out the first HVO fueling in the Brazilian maritime sector

Vast Infraestrutura carried out, at its Açu Liquid Terminal, in partnership with Efen, Wilson Sons, and Porto do Açu, the first fueling with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) in the Brazilian maritime sector.

The barge-to-ship operation was conducted at one of the TLA’s berths and fueled the tugboat WS Rosalvo, from Wilson Sons, with the fuel, also known as green diesel, which has the potential to reduce the vessel’s carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by up to 80%.

The initiative aligns with Vast’s goal of strengthening the decarbonization of the maritime sector and will enable the reduction of emissions across the Port, including in operations at its Oil Terminal, T-Oil, where Wilson Sons tugboats also operate.

To celebrate the achievement, representatives from the four companies gathered at the TLA and reinforced the pioneering nature of the operation and the major milestone it represents for the Port of Açu and for the entire sector.

Vast Infraestrutura will participate in Intermodal South America 2025

The event, the largest in logistics solutions in the Americas, will take place on April 22, 23, and 24 in São Paulo and bring together the main players in the sector.

Vast Infraestrutura will participate in the seminar “The Power of Oil in Rio de Janeiro”, organized by Seenemar this Thursday, April 10, as a sponsor of the event.

2025 Contractors OHS Recognition Ceremony

On March 19, Vast Infraestrutura held its annual Contractors OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) Recognition Ceremony, honoring the top three partner companies that stood out in 2024 for their health and safety initiatives at T-Oil.

The event took place at Hotel do Açu, located in the Port of Açu, in São João da Barra, and recognized Brasanitas, Ambipar, and OceanPact as the award recipients.

The ceremony is part of Vast’s Contractors OHS Recognition Program, an initiative aimed at strengthening a culture of prevention and best practices in the workplace, in line with Vast’s commitment to Safety and Sustainability.

Vast and Be8 sign agreement to develop biofuels market for navigation

The agreement includes studies for Vast to provide logistical infrastructure at the Açu Liquid Terminal and connect Be8 to fuel distributors and customers at the Port of Açu to foster this new market.

Vast Infraestrutura and Be8, a leading biodiesel production company, announced on Wednesday (March 26th) the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at developing the biofuels market for the maritime sector at the Port of Açu, located in the northern part of the state of Rio de Janeiro. Today, the port is the second largest in the country in terms of vessel movement. In 2024, over 7,300 ships accessed Açu.

“This new partnership with Vast allows us to work with biodiesel, which can be used for the bunker supplied to ships, and the new Be8 Bevant® to advance the decarbonization of port management operations,” highlighted Erasmo Carlos Battistella, President of Be8. “Be8 BeVant® was developed specifically to serve companies that consume large volumes of fossil fuels and are looking for a global solution to reduce emissions in the short term by replacing diesel 100%,” explained Battistella.

Bunker with 24% biodiesel

The addition of biodiesel to traditional marine fuels, such as marine gas oil (MGO) and very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), also known as bunker, is one of the main alternatives for decarbonizing maritime transport, which is responsible for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The use of this blend does not require modifications to the vessels’ engines. In 2024, the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) authorized, for the first time, the commercialization of bunker with up to 24% biodiesel.

“The Port of Açu plays an important role in fostering the decarbonization of the maritime sector in Brazil. Vast aims to contribute through two main pathways: one focused on providing low-carbon fuels and blends, and another offering electrification alternatives for moored vessels – an initiative that has already been adopted since 2024 for tugboats operating at Vast’s Oil Terminal (T-Oil),” emphasizes Eduardo Goulart, Commercial Director of Vast Infraestrutura.

The agreement includes studies for Vast to provide the necessary infrastructure and connect Be8 to fuel distributors and customers at the Port of Açu to foster this new market. The MoU also includes studies to assess whether the Port of Açu could serve as an alternative for importing inputs used in the biodiesel production process, such as methanol, and as a new point for exporting and cabotaging the final product, addressing current logistical bottlenecks in the country.

In both cases, Vast’s Liquid Terminal (TLA) will be the infrastructure used to receive, store, and dispatch raw materials and biodiesel. The Port of Açu still has available industrial land for the future installation of storage plants for the biofuels produced by Be8.

Vast and Port of Rotterdam collaborate to drive tanker electrification

The two companies signed an agreement to conduct fleet studies, energy demand assessments, and other factors to enable Shore Power, or Onshore Power (OPS) for tankers.

Vast Infraestrutura and the Port of Rotterdam, considered the largest in Europe and an important energy hub, announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote the electrification of tankers at berth worldwide.

Named OPS for Tankers First Movers Coalition, the initiative seeks to engage maritime industry stakeholders such as shipowners, oil companies, and terminals and their trade associations to develop a joint action plan to promote Onshore Power Supply (OPS) for tankers.

The measure is in line with one of the Decarbonization Pathways developed by Vast, which aims to enable the electrification of vessels through partnerships to contribute to the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Today, T-Oil already provides shore power for tugboats and support vessels.

The agreement outlines case studies on fleet composition, navigation routes, the adaptability of the world’s leading liquid terminals, energy demand, and other key factors necessary for the safe connection of these vessels to the power grid. The studies aim to create the necessary collaboration between stakeholders. Various stakeholders will be involved after the contracting of the studies. The results will be brought under the attention of regulatory agencies, including the IMO to find support for regulations that will be needed for successful deployment of this technology in the future.

“Today, there are three main barriers: technology, adequate port infrastructure, and a fleet capable of connecting to the grid. Through this partnership, our goal is to engage multiple stakeholders to accelerate OPS for tankers, which is already considered an efficient way to decarbonize ships at berth for various other ship types. The tanker market poses specific challenges that we want to address in this project. ,” said Adriano Truffi Lima, Sustainability Director at Vast Infraestrutura.

The Oil Companies International Marine Forum (OCIMF), of which Vast is a member, established an OPS working group that already published preliminary design recommendations for tankers and terminals and announced a full information paper covering aspects of safe application. Port of Rotterdam contributes to this paper based on extensive studies. It is expected that in the mean time the electrotechnical standard for tankers will become available.

In the maritime sector, emissions from tankers carrying crude oil and its derivatives are considered “hard-to-abate” due to the difficulty of reducing their emissions. OPS is an available technology that allows clean decarbonization at berth, but that still needs to be embraced by the tanker sector. This initiative aims to bring a positive boost. The first case study that will be led by Vast and Port of Rotterdam will focus on crude oil tankers. The future case studies will focus on other segments of the tanker market.  

According to the Vast executive, this voluntary initiative has the potential to positively impact the maritime sector on a global scale. “One of the pillars of Vast’s decarbonization plan is to develop collaborative solutions to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions of the maritime segment and help to lower the footprint of oil exports from Brazil. The initial cooperation with the Port of Rotterdam, one of the world’s most prominent ports, is a strategic move for this proposes,” Lima added.

The Port of Rotterdam is a major entry point for crude oil into Europe and a key destination for tankers conducting transshipment operations from Vast’s terminal, located at the Port of Açu in northern Rio de Janeiro state. In 2024, Vast accounted for nearly 40% of Brazil’s total crude oil exports. It is estimated that the country’s oil export volumes will triple by 2030.

Vast Infraestrutura has expanded its Onshore Power Supply to support vessels at T-Oil

With the installation of two new electrical panels, Vast Infraestrutura now provide Onshore Power Supply (OPS) for operational support and emergency response vessels, including those dedicated to environmental protection, while they are on stand-by.

This initiative builds on the electrified dock for tugboats implemented in May 2024, which supplies power to these vessels between maneuvers.

Expanding onshore power supply to support vessels represents a step forward in Vast’s Decarbonization Plan, on the path to electrification. With this installation, the company can reduce its dependence on fossil fuel-powered generators, cutting carbon emissions. The system can supply power to up to four vessels from Ocean Pact and Ambipar.
